Handmade Elm Coffee Table Upcycle

This is a one of a kind piece!

We bought a vintage Ercol Old Colonial drop leaf coffee table in a dark finish, with what we considered to have a clumpy, very busy base (lots of legs).  Never a fan of the darker finish we set to work, removed the Elm top and the dark stain. The next step was to joint the pieces to make one solid elm piece for the 'new' table top. The base of the the table has also had the dark stain removed and shows the indentations that once housed the hinges for the 'drop leaf' action. All part of the story of this fantastic table.

In the workshop we crafted a new base from solid Ash and added elegant slightly tapered beech legs.

We have sealed with Osmo Raw transparent oil to knock back the natural orange tones of the Elm.  A final coat of Gilboy's Organic beeswax polish gives a beautiful sheen.
